Whiskey Myers brings the Honky Tonk to Freedom Hill

Multi-platinum country rockers Whiskey Myers delivered the Honky and the Tonk to the crowd and a whole lot more Saturday night in Sterling Heights, Michigan. It was a great night for a concert at Freedom Hill as the local’s still and will always call it. The weather was perfect for some ass kicking southern Texas country music to get the hill dancing and rocking and ready to party. Kicking off the evening Nashville singer-songwriter Reid Haughton who put on a very entertaining half-hour set filled with guitar shreds and solos. The early arrivals were treated to a great set and on the prowl for some more. Checkout Reid Laughton latest album Higher than 9.

The night was about to shift into second gear with the hometown band from Flint, Michigan Whitey Morgan taking the stage. Michigan has turned out some great musicians over the years and Morgan is no exception going strong since 2005 and looking for more. The 10-song set was a great mix of music sang brilliantly by Eric Allen (a.k.a. Whitey Morgan) and loaded with some fantastic country energy and beats. The highlight of the set came when the band went full Bruce Springsteen with the cover “I’m on Fire” holy hell that was great! The crowd showed some hometown love that will last a memory for Whitey Morgan and the 78’s. Checkout Morgan’s latest album Hard Times and White Lines.

Finally, it was time to see what we all came for and that was Whiskey Myers who brought a little bit of Honk and some Tonk and a whole lot of partying. Strap in folks here we go! I want to say this first the band posted on their socials that read “Thank you for always treating us so good” and we want to say to them, “No thank you for treating us so good.” Kicking the night off with “The Wolf” off their 2022 album Tornillo their sixth studio album. That was a nice way to kick things off. Up next for me which i thought was a banger track GASOLINE good lord that was hair standing good. The crowd in attendance thought so to with huge and i do mean huge pop after the song ended. I bet you the folks in Fraser, the next city over could hear it. Gasoline has it all, rock sounding for sure, great guitar licks and one hell of a vocal display by lead singer Cody Canon. Coody at times during this track was reminding me of the lead singer from Rival Sons Jay Buc and that’s not half bad at all. I will also add Gasoline had me so floored it is now on my Spotify list of songs, Thanks Coody!

The 20-song set was very well hand crafted like a good bottle of wine bringing a mix of old and new along with some great covers. There was definitely no one leaving the show and complaining about it, oh no, not on this night! Speaking of those covers the band gave us some Jackson Browne to the crowd’s delight and everyone favorite “Running on Empty” packed with some great vibes turning Freedom Hill into one giant dance floor. Ending the night with another cover this time it was the classic hit “Johnny B Goode” from the great Chuck Berry that left folks all lathered up upon leaving with some dancing all the way to their cars. Whiskey Myers has been climbing the latter year after year and ready to be on top. Checkout the band in a city near you and trust me you won’t be disappointed.
