One of the most well-respected singer/songwriters of his generation, Peter Case is an artist whose eclectic body of work embraces rock & roll, contemporary folk, and blues and will be playing in Livonia on April 28 at Trinity House Theatre. He first gained a reputation with the taut power pop bands the Nerves (One Way Ticket) and the Plimsouls (Everywhere at Once), but he moved from rock to a more acoustic-oriented sound with his 1986 solo debut Peter Case.
1993’s Sings Like Hell was a straightforward set of blues and folk covers, 2000’s Flying Saucer Blues ranks with his best sets of original songs, and 2017’s On the Way Downtown: Recorded Live on FolkScene documents the intimate, fervent tone of his live shows.
Case was born in Buffalo, New York. A veteran of several rock bands and the local bar scene as a teenager, Case dropped out of high school when he was fifteen and after several years of traveling arrived in 1973 in San Francisco, where he performed as a street musician. During this period a documentary about the local music scene, Nightshift, captured the young Case on film. After a bout with some serious health issues, Case returned to action with HWY 62, which put a focus back on his acoustic music. In 2019, Case launched a crowdfunding campaign to finance the recording of a pair of unique albums. The campaign was a success, and the first of the two LPs, a collection of acoustic blues tunes titled The Midnight Broadcast, was released in March 2021.
